Silviu has only 5 days left before his release from the juvenile detention centre. But his imminent freedom is threatened when his estranged mother returns to take custody of his younger brother, whom Silviu raised. Driven by desperation and love for a social worker, he escapes and kidnaps her in a reckless attempt to protect his family.
If I Want to Whistle I Whistle is a visceral exploration of abandonment and fierce loyalty. Starring Last Waltz Productions’ artistic director Clara Voda, and featuring a searing breakout performance by George Piștereanu, it’s a gritty, unmissable journey into the heart of a young man with nothing left to lose.
All proceeds from the screening will go toward Last Waltz Production’s upcoming stage production of Chekhov’s Three Sisters. This event is a unique opportunity for Australian audiences to discover the power of Romanian New Wave cinema while supporting the arts.

Florin Șerban is an acclaimed Romanian film director and screenwriter.
Șerban achieved major international recognition with his debut feature film, If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle (2010). The gritty drama won the prestigious Jury Grand Prix (Silver Bear) and the Alfred Bauer Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival. He followed this success with the award-winning drama Box (2015) and his "Trilogy of Love" cycle, which includes Love 1. Dog (2018) and Love 2. America (2020). Known for casting non-professional actors, he also founded The Acting School in Bucharest to teach a visceral, alternative approach to film acting.
